McLaren Construction has repurposed retail and office space at 55 Moorgate for Cleveland Clinic’s third London facility.
Situated in the heart of the City of London the Cleveland Clinic Moorgate Outpatient Centre opened to patients in December 2023 for outpatient appointments, diagnostics, and general practice appointments.
Cleveland Clinic is a not-for-profit multispecialty academic medical centre that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. Founded in 1921, Cleveland Clinic now has over 6,700 beds and 77,000 employees worldwide, based in 23 hospitals and more than 275 outpatient facilities.
Specialist fit out
Fit-out works for the 13,000 sq. ft, 50-room clinic include infrastructure for specialist services such as cardiology, dermatology, digestive diseases, gynaecology and urology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, sports medicine, and women’s health.
The clinic’s MRI scanner was installed through the existing first floor façade on Moorgate by temporarily dismantling two windows and the mullion between them. From there it was moved through to a specially sound-proofed room with a strengthened structure. The MRI-associated service infrastructure is designed for future upgrades to next-generation scanners.
Repurposing ground floor retail and first floor office space for clinical use required replacement of the raised access floor, ventilation system and architectural ceiling at first floor level and provision of a dedicated plant room on the ground floor. An additional lift was installed for patient use.
High street clinics
The UK is likely to see more well-equipped clinics on its main streets due to changes in provision from both the NHS and the private sector. Away from thriving centres like Moorgate, this trend offers an opportunity to re-use empty shops and offices and bring additional footfall to town centres.
While the private sector responds to high demand for a model of care that gives patients fast access to consultants, GPs and diagnostic services, the NHS is consolidating smaller GP practices into centrally located hubs with broader services.
Cleveland Clinic’s two floors at 55 Moorgate offer a highly sustainable location due to its proximity to public transport and retention of 78% of the building’s original frame in a 2020 refurbishment by landlord Kajima, which won City of London Refurbishment of the Year at the OAS Development Awards 2022.
