Project represents McLaren’s continued progression in distribution and logistics sector.
McLaren Construction announces project win having secured a contract from Kuehne + Nagel to deliver two new build warehouse and logistic centres with a combined size of over 80,000 sq metres in Donnington, Near Telford, Shropshire.
The contract is part of an £83 million investment by the Ministry of Defence in a state of the art Defence Fulfilment Centre (DFC) which will bring the Military’s logistics, commodities and support services up to the standard of industry best practice. Kuehne + Nagel are the storage, distribution and freight lead for the 13 year Logistic Commodities and Services Transformation (LCST) contract which MOD awarded to Team Leidos in April 2015 and building the DFC is a key part of the transformation programme.
Construction of the warehouses begins shortly and is due to complete by Autumn 2016. The new facilities will be home to some of the most efficient storage and worldwide distribution of stocks for the UK armed forces.
Each unit will be divided in to chambers along with the installation of racking. The buildings will also feature a cladded façade. As part of the project, McLaren will also be carrying out extensive upgrades to the existing local roads to the site.
The land has been purchased by the Ministry of Defence and is adjacent to the existing MOD Donnington site.
Phil Pringle, Managing Director, McLaren Construction, commented: “We are very pleased to have secured this contract with Kuehne + Nagel. The project represents a landmark win for our business and demonstrates the growth of McLaren in the region. We look forward to furthering our track record in the distribution and logistics sector and successfully delivering what will be a high profile and state-of-the art facility for Team Leidos, Kuehne + Nagel and the MOD.”
John Hartley, Director of Storage, Distribution & Freight, Kuehne + Nagel, commented:
“As storage, distribution and freight specialist within Team Leidos, Kuehne + Nagel is looking forward to developing and implementing a World class logistics operation for the MOD that will ensure that our Armed Forces get what they need, when and wherever they need it. The Donnington DFC is a key part of this transformation. The state of the art facility will enable the efficient storage and worldwide distribution of stocks that move most regularly and most quickly.”
The scheme is due for completion Autumn 2016.
