NATO's largest indoor drone testing facility in Europe

McLaren Construction were appointed as Main Contractor to deliver Europe’s largest indoor drone testing facility for Panattoni in Swindon.

The facility is based at the vast 370-acre Panattoni Park site has been praised by the Ministry of Defence as “world-leading” and is expected to create hundreds of jobs in the local area.

This project will allow the UK to "embrace technologies" that are redefining warfare and the centre will allow the military to develop and use new tech in "a matter of weeks" rather than years, according to Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis MP.

39 week construction programme

Delivered within a 39-week construction programme, the project was designed around a structured and collaborative delivery strategy, with early supply chain engagement, planning and consistent communication throughout every stage of the build.

Sustainability was at the heart of the project, with BREEAM Outstanding accreditation being awarded, placing Unit 4 within the <1% of certified developments worldwide. The project also targeted net zero upfront embodied carbon, alongside the use of modern methods of construction and recycled materials.

Drawing on the Midlands & North team’s strong Industrial & Logistics expertise, McLaren successfully delivered the complex facility, strengthening its position as a trusted partner for Defence infrastructure and supporting its strategic growth within the UK’s Defence and security sector.
